Prepping your Lawn for Spring after a Long Winter
After a long winter, many of us are looking forward to leaving the cold behind and getting back out in our yards. But, before you start planting flowers and pulling weeds, there are some important steps you need to take to make sure your lawn is ready for the growing season. So, Green’s Lawncare & Property Services is here with what you should do first when prepping your lawn for spring.
Clean up Debris
Before you can start thinking about seeding or fertilizing, the first step is to clean up all the debris that has accumulated over the winter. Look for dead leaves, twigs, branches, and other items that have blown into your yard throughout the season. Rake them up and remove them from the lawn so that they don’t prevent any new grass from growing in their place. You may also want to trim trees, shrubs, and hedges to help promote healthy growth during the warmer months.
Test Your Soil
Once you’ve removed any debris from your lawn, it’s time to test your soil’s pH level. This will help determine if you need to add fertilizer or adjust pH levels before seeding or planting anything new. The good news is that testing soil pH doesn’t require any special equipment or expertise — We can actually take care of it for you. We can also take care of fertilization, which is one of our specialties and promotes a healthy, green lawn.
Aerate & Seed
Although spring is not a good time to aerate and seed your lawn, its great to start thinking about it! Aeration helps loosen compacted soil so that air and water can penetrate deeper into the ground and encourage healthy root growth. Once aerated, overseed with cool-season grass like fescue, which will help fill in bare spots while providing plenty of shade come summertime.
